Old town in the suburbs
Formerly an old village of which its origins can be traced to the 11th century, Arheilgen was incorporated into the city of Darmstadt in the 20th century. It is located about 20 minutes north of the city center by tram.
Since the 1990s, large-scale development has been going on in the south side of Arheilgen, expanding the residential areas. On the other hand, there are still areas where the atmosphere of the old village remains strongly. Many of its residents are Germans who have lived in the village for generations. Therefore, the proportion of foreign residents is lower than the average in the city center.
The variety of supermarkets in the area guarantee that residents have no problems with grocery shopping, but the options for children’s after-school activities are limited. For such activities, it is necessary for families to go to the city center. Detached houses with gardens and low-rise row houses are typical for housing in this area. Aircraft noise pollution is a problem for the residents in this district, due to the heavy air traffic to and from the Frankfurt Airport.
